A manganese-catalyzed regioselective sp³ C–S bond formation through C–C bond cleavage of cyclobutanols is described. A variety of primary and secondary alkyl thioethers are efficiently prepared under mild reaction conditions. The mechanistic pathways involving radical-mediated tandem C–C bond cleavage and C–S bond formation are proposed.
