Pincer transition metal complexes have versatilereactivities to catalyze many organic transformations and to activate strongchemical bonds. In particular, complexes with ligand derived from tridentatepyridine-based framework exhibit interesting reactivities. It has beendemonstrated that unique bond activation reactions can be achieved througharomatization–dearomatization of the central pyridine ring. We have designedand prepared a series of transition metal catalysts based on a novel class ofpincer-type PN3 ligands which are capableof interacting with the substrates during the reaction. This “metal-ligandcooperative catalysis “model offers unprecedented reactivities. Dehydrogenativecoupling of alcohols and amines was achieved via protonation-deprotonation inthe aromatization-dearomatization process.
