Abstract(摘    要)

A highly competitive research environment withincreasingly limited research funding has created a “Publish or Perish”attitude among scientists who are judged on the quantity rather than quality oftheir research articles. This presentation provides a brief overview of currenttrends and challenges in scientific publishing, some ethical considerations, how publishers and authors interact and influence each other, and how thepublishing arena is being transformed. Tips will be presented on how to selectan appropriate journal for your paper, what aspects of preparation andpresentation to focus on from an editor’s and referee’s perspective, and hintsfor increasing the discoverability of your paper after publication. Theimportance of books publishing and the workflow involved in producing ascientific book will also be discussed.

GUDRUN WALTER

Gudrun Walter studied chemistry and German literature atthe University of Tübingen in Germany. 1991 she finished her Ph.D. in thelaboratory of Prof. Ingo-Peter Lorenz in coordination chemistry, working ontransition metal complexes with sulfur and sulfur oxide ligands. In parallel, she was lecturer in organic and analytical chemistry at the University ofApplied Sciences in Reutlingen, Germany.

In 1990 she started her carrier in publishing as anEditor of Angewandte Chemie atWiley-VCH, Germany, and also managed chemistry journals such as Molecular Informatics and Propellants, Explosives and Pyrotechnics. She moved into book, reference and database publishing, and was appointedEditorial Director. She is now responsible for Wiley’s and Wiley-VCH’s globalprograms in chemistry, physics, as well as materials, life, earth andenvironmental sciences.

She is anelected board member of the division of the German Chemical Society for EqualOpportunity in Chemistry.

JOSE OLIVEIRA

José Oliveira studied chemistry at the Universityof the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa). He obtained his PhD at thesame university in 2000 in organic synthesis, working on reaction methodologyand natural product synthesis.  He workedfor a year as a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Pharmacy at theUniversiteit Antwerpen (Antwerp, Belgium) developing mass spectrometrictechniques for analyzing trace organic contaminants in the atmosphere. Hejoined Wiley-VCH (Weinheim, Germany) in January 2001 and served as SeniorAssociate Editor of Angewandte Chemie. He helped launch Chemistry – An AsianJournal, for which he served as Deputy Editor. In 2008 he assumed his currentrole as Editor-in-Chief of the nano- and microtechnology journal Small. He was alsofounding Editor of the newly launched Advanced Healthcare Materials.
