摘要:

Tremendousdevelopments on living or "controlled/living" polymerizationtechnique have been achieved over the last couple of decades in polymerchemistry. However, there are always limitations of mechanisms inherent to themonomer structure. In this lecture, we will discuss novel polymerizationsystems by controlling the reaction mechanisms, which include combination ofstep-growth and chain-growth radical polymerization, and reversible mechanistictransformation between two different active species during controlled/livingpolymerizations. Both systems are based on dormant covalent bonds, which havebeen used just for controlling the propagation reaction. For example, themetal-catalyzed step-growth radical polymerization resulted in a novel strategyfor preparing sequence-regulated vinyl copolymers and the unprecedented  simultaneous chain- and step-growthpolymerization. On the other hand, reversible mechanistic transformation ofradical species was investigated from or into cationic species through C–Sdormant species to achieve concurrent and interconvertible living radical andcationic polymerization. In addition, we will discuss the overview of ourrecent research topic in bio-based polymers by the controlled/living polymerizationof naturally-occurring or -derived renewable monomers, such as terpenes, phenylpropanoids, and itaconic derivatives.
