Incredible progress has been made in syntheticpolymer chemistry to control the polymer chain length, structure andarchitecture via controlled living polymerization reactions as well asfunctionalization chemistries. The development in the field is still veryintense and dynamic and one of the remaining challenges is the synthesis ofsequence-controlled multifunctional polymers. Many clever chemical andbiological approaches have been presented that allow a sequence-controlledincorporation during formation of the polymer chain. The alternative approachto prepare sequence-controlled multi-functional polymers viapost-polymerization modifications is still challenging. Most important, theright monomer bearing different reactive sites that allow sequential orthogonalreactions with different functional groups needs to be found. Examplesemploying thiolactones or pentafluorophenyl 4-vinylbenzenesulfonates could showthat sequence control via post-polymerization reactions can be realized to somedegree, but usually the functionalization site was just located at the same carbonof the polymer backbone. We found that, 1,1-disubstituted-2-vinylcyclopropanederivatives are good candidates for a sequence-controlled post-polymerizationmulti-functionalization. Synthetic routes, possibilities, remaining challengesand opportunities will be discussed.
