Stereocontrol during the polymerization of vinyl monomers is of great importance, because the tacticity of polymers significantly influences their properties and functions. Although radical polymerization has been frequently used for the preparations of various vinyl polymers due to its wide applicability and simple process, the control of the stereochemistry during the polymerization is often not easy, and usually we get atactic polymers.
Poly[(meth)acrylamide]s are some of the interesting polymers due to the unique properties caused by the polar amide group on the side chain. However, the stereospecific polymerization of (meth)acrylamides, expect for anionic polymerization of N,N-disubstituted acrylamides, had been rarely reported. In 2001, we found that Lewis acids, such as rare earth metal trifluoromethanesulfonates (triflates), are effective for increasing the isotactic-specificity in the radical polymerization of (meth)acrylamides. We also found that the radical polymerization of bulky methacrylamides, such as N-(triphenylmethyl)methacrylamide (TrMAM), proceeds in a highly isotactic manner, and optically active polymers can be produced in the presence of chiral additives. In my lecture, these two different methods of the stereocontrol in the radical polymerization of (meth)acrylamides will be mainly discussed.
Yoshio Okamoto教授简介:
冈本佳男1941年1月出生,1969年3月获大阪大学理学博士学位,现任日本名古屋大学先端技术研究所客座教授,哈尔滨工程大学特聘教授。是国际著名的手性体分离材料领域科学家,从事高分子化学、有机立体化学等专业的研究工作,曾在世界著名学术杂志上发表论文400多篇,出版著作38部,授权日本专利170项,美国和欧洲专利62项。1970-1972年留学美国,在美国密西根大学任博士研究员。他历任大阪大学基础工学部副教授、名古屋大学工学部教授、名古屋大学大学院工学研究科教授、名古屋大学名誉教授、名古屋大学先端科学研究机构客座教授;2004-2006年任日本高分子学会会长、2006年3月起任日本学术会议联盟议员。他曾获日本天皇奖和日本高分子学会奖、纤维学会奖、日本化学会化学技术奖、艺术科学奖、美国手性体材料奖章等。因在手性体分离材料合成与分离技术方面做出的突出贡献, 2006年他荣获诺贝尔化学奖提名奖。
