Abstract: We discuss the controlled atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of a stimuli-responsive ionic liquid surfactant acrylate (ILBr), from both ends of telechelic poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) macroinitiators, (BrX-PPO-XBr), wherein each end of the PPO center block is esterified with bromoisobutyryloyl (BrX). The resulting highly water soluble triblock copolymers, poly(ILBr-b-PO-b-ILBr), are multi-stimuli responsive. This new class of triblocks exhibits classical surface activity in lowering surface tension at the air-water interface and in modifying wetting of waterborne coatings. They also immunize model colloids against coagulation induced by Debye-Hückel (indifferent electrolyte) electrostatic screening. The poly(ILBr) endblocks are stimuli-responsive to certain anions, such as hexafluorophosphate, which induce precipitation by converting the hygroscopic imidazolium bromide moieties into hydrophobic imidazolium hexafluorophosphate ion pairs. Further, sol-gel thermoreversibility was unexpectedly found in one example as an additional form of supramolecular stimuli-responsiveness. This aqueous triblock thermoreversibly forms a gel phase above a line of LSCTs (lower solution concentration temperatures) at weight fractions above 0.33. The structure of this gel phase has not been established, but it most likely a lyotropic liquid crystalline phase of poly(ILBr-b-PO-b-ILBr) micelles. Applications in stabilizing and destabilizing nanocarbon, latex, and other dispersions are Illustrated, as is also controlled phase transfer of graphene from water to nonaqueous solvent to water.

Ed, Adv. Mater., Macromolecules等杂志发表学术论文200余篇,主编出版专著3本, 文章被引用次数超过3200次。多次担任国际著名戈登会议(Gordon Research Conferences)主席与副主席,多次担任美国化学会分会主席,发起并已成功举办10届Particles会议。在高分子物理化学、流体与界面等学术研究领域具有较大的国际影响。
