College of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science (CCCEMS) is renowned for its high quality of education and research, and caliber of graduates.

History

CCCEMS was formed by the original School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and the Division of Materials Science and Engineering. The School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering grew out of the Chemistry Department of Soochow University, which was founded in 1914 and was one of the earliest chemistry departments in China. The founders, Professor N. Gist Gee and Dr. E. V. Jones, both graduating from Vanderbilt University in the United States, were the first science teacher and the first chemistry teacher of Soochow University. In 1917, the First Master Degree of Chemistry in China was proudly issued by Soochow University.

Education and Career

CCCEMS has over 1,200 postgraduates and  over 1,500 undergraduate students in 10 different majors, including chemistry, applied chemistry, polymer science and engineering, functional materials, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, etc. Recent graduates are working for government departments and large industrial corporations, which rely on the firm foundation of technical problem-solving skills developed during their time at CCCEMS.

Research

CCCEMS is research intensive in a variety of fields and works collaboratively across areas. There are around 300 faculty staff in the College, many of whom are acknowledged leaders in their research fields. In the College, there are 5 academicians, more than 30 national-level talents and 20 provincial-level talents. Also, there are nearly 20 chair professors, visiting professors, adjunct professors and honorary professors, including a Nobel Prize winner, a Fellow of Royal Society of Canada, etc. CCCEMS has a range of national and provincial-level research centers, such as the National Center for International Research on Intelligent Nano-Materials and Detection Technologies in Environmental Protection, National Engineering Laboratory of New Functional Polymer Materials, Advanced Polymer Materials Design and Application, etc. In the past three years, more than 100 papers were published in Science, Nature Commun., JACS, Adv. Mater., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., etc.

Noticeably, both disciplines of Chemistry and Materials Science of the College are listed top 1‰ around the world according to the latest Essential Science Indicators. Besides, the latest Nature Index indicates that the discipline of Chemistry ranks Top 12 in China.

International collaboration

CCCEMS runs joint-degree programs, including 3+2 for Bachelor/Master and 2+2 for Ph.D. programs. More than 200 students have continued their study via the programs with Nanyang Technological University, National University of Singapore, the University of Akron, the University of Waterloo, Wayne State University and so on.
