Abstract:

This talk will focus on a special class offunctional polymers, made up from polymerization of ionic liquids (ILs). Theyare commonly termed poly(ionic liquid)s or polymerized ionic liquids (PILs). Insuch a structure configuration, some unique properties of ILs are incorporatedinto the macromolecular architecture. This innovation in structure design inturn expands the property window and application spectrum of ILs andtraditional polyelectrolytes.1-4

The first part of my talk deals with PILcolloidal nanoparticles that were synthesized via dispersion polymerization ofvinylimidazolium-type ionic liquid monomers with long alkyl chains. Cryogenictransmission electron microscopy measurements visualized a highly ordered, complex innerstructure in these nanoparticles, which is tuneable in terms ofthe alkyl chain length. These PIL nanoparticles served as a materials platformto provide solutions to many systems, such as “smart” dispersant, precursor tocarbon “nanobubbles”, catalyst support, nanocarriers, etc.5-11

The second part of my talk will discussporous polymer membranes. Functional porous polymer membranes with largesurface area can be applied in broad fields, including catalysis, separation, filtration and energy applications. There are a number of established methodsfor the preparation of porous membranes from neutral or weakly chargedpolymers. However, porous polymer membranes from strong polyelectrolytes arefar more difficult to prepare. We will discuss a new approach developed in ourgroup for the preparation of (nano)porous polyelectrolyte membranes withhierarchical and unique pore architectures via electrostatic complexation.12-14 Being simultaneously charged and (nano)porous in nature together with a uniquegradient profile, this membrane could serve as sensors and actuators.

Biography

Jiayin Yuan studied chemistryat the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. After moving to Germany he went first to theUniversity of Siegen before he then moved to the University of Bayreuth. ThereYuan received his PhD (Summa cum laude) supervised by Axel H. E. Müller in2009. After postdoctoral work with Markus Antonietti at the Max PlanckInstitute of Colloids and Interfaces in Potsdam-Golm, he started hisindependent career in 2011. Since then he is leading a research group in thedepartment of Colloid Chemistry. In 2014, he received one of the ERC StartingGrants. Endowed with up to 1.5 Mio EUR this grant promotes basic research onnanoporous polymer membranes in the next five years. He received theOtto-Warburg Award in 2009, Dr. Hermann-Schnell Award in 2015 and Dozentenpreis(Young Investigator Award) in 2016.
