Polymercrystallization is arguably the most precise and powerful assembly process insoft matter. In this talk, I will show that with tailor-designed polymers,after a controlled crystallization process, nanostructures with unprecedentedstructural control can be accomplished. For example, a miniemulsioncrystallization method has been used to grow nanosized, polymer single crystalcapsules. We coined the name “crystalsome” to describe this unique structurebecause they are formed by polymer lamellar crystals and their structure mimicsliposomes and polymersomes. Using poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) as the modelpolymer, we show that curved water/p-xylene interface formed by theminiemulsion process can guide the growth of PLLA single crystals. Atomic forcemicroscopy measurement demonstrated a two ‒ three orders of magnitude increasein bending modulus compared with conventional polymersomes. In another case, byusing end-functionalized crystalline polymers, and controlling chain foldingduring crystallization, we show that super dense and loop polymer brushes canbe synthesized. Novel responsive molecular Velcro has also been synthesized. Weenvisage that not only can this designed polymer crystallization help betterunderstand the crystallization mechanisms of long chain polymers, it is also apowerful tool to synthesize functional nanomaterials.

Christopher Y. Li教授主要从事高分子物理和材料方面的研究,目前为美国Drexel University终身教授,美国物理学会会士(American Physical Society Fellow)。1991-1995,中国科技大学,本科;1995-1999,美国阿克伦大学(The University of Akron)高分子科学与工程系,博士;2000-2001,阿克伦大学高分子科学与工程系博士后研究员;2002-2007,Drexel University材料科学与工程系助理教授(Assistant Professor);2007-2011,Drexel University材料科学与工程系副教授(Associate Professor);2011-迄今,Drexel University材料科学与工程系教授。在顶级国际期刊Nat. Mater., Nat. Nanotechnol., J.Am. Chem. Soc., Adv. Mater., Phys. Rev. Lett., Macromolecules等杂志发表学术论文120多篇,参与撰写专著15本,文章被引用次数超过3000次,H因子35。获各种奖励21项。为Nature、Nature Materials等杂志审稿人,受邀举办学术讲座110余次。其工作被NSF, the Royal Chemical Society, American Chemical Society, ASMInternational, Physical Review Focus等杂志或媒体报道。于2003年获得美国的NSF-CAREER Award,2006年获得中国的海外杰青,2011年获得NSF Special Creativity Award,2012年当选为美国物理学会会士,2014年当选为北美热分析学会会士,2016年获得InauguralProvost’s Award for OutstandingMid-Career Scholarly Achievement。
