Abstract:

This seminar will introduce our recently developed a number of new platformtechnologies based on mordent polymer chemistry. One example will be anantibacterial and peptide-based star polymer (Figure 1a) we developed recentlyand it can kill multi-drug resistant gram-negative superbugs without causingtoxicity to healthy cells (Nature Microbiol. 2016, 1, 16162). The 2nd example will be photo-induced controlled polymerization using RAFT agentwithout using any initiators (Figure 1b; Macromolecules 2015, 48, 3864). The other examples include continuous assembly of polymer (CAP)technology, which creates macromolecular architectures in 3D forms. The finalexample is PEG based hydrogel technology used as tissue engineering scaffolds.Such material has formed substrate for a synthetic cornea transplant which isnow close to stage 1 human trials.  Specific examples will be presented for theseplatform technologies.

Biography:

ProfessorGreg Qiao received his B.Eng. in Polymer Engineering at Donghua University in1982 and his Ph.D. at the University of Queensland in 1996 in synthetic organicchemistry.  He then worked as aPostdoctoral Fellow at the University of Melbourne, when he re-entered thefield of synthetic polymer chemistry and engineering. He became a Lecturer inthe Department of Chemical and Bimolecular Engineering in 2002, then promotedto a Senior Lecturer in 2004, Associate Professor and Reader in 2007, and fullProfessor in 2009.  He has also been theAssistant Dean (Research) in the Melbourne School of Engineering since 2008 andthe Acting Associate Dean (research) for 2014. From 2012-2015, he also was anAustralian Research Council’s professorial Future Fellow. Prof Qiao was electedas a Fellow of Australia Chemical Institute (FRACI) in 2006. Prof Qiaocurrently is the Chair of Polymer Division of the Royal Australia ChemicalInstitute (RACI).

ProfQiao leads a research group with about 20 researchers and has published morethan 160 papers (including 20 cover articles) in high-impact internationaljournals. Prof. Qiao has secured over AU$20M in research funds, including 24ARC grants and projects in 2 CRC programs, 2 NHMRC program and 2 ARC ITRPprograms. His key research interests are in the synthesis of novelmacromolecular architectures by controlled polymerizations, polymeric membranesfor gas separations, poly-peptide based nanoparticles for drug delivery andantibacterial agents (alternative to antibiotics), bio-macromolecular scaffoldsfor soft tissue engineering and functional polymers for specific applicationsin mineral, paint, packaging, water and composite industry.
