Abstract: Bridged silsesquioxane (BS) is an interesting family of hybrid silicas obtainedby the hydrolysis of organosilanes consisting of at least two hydrolysabletrialkoxysilyl groups. BS prepared from suitably conceived molecular precursorscombine the properties of the organic fragments with those of the silica matrixoffering the possibility to obtain multifunctional materials with fine-tunedproperties for challenging fields of interests. In this presentation, someexamples of functional BS for application in several fields will be discussed.
CV: Michel Wong Chi Man is a senior CNRS researcher (Research Director). Hereceived a Ph.D. from the University of Montpellier 2 in 1987 and then did apostdoc as a Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) fellow at the University ofHeidelberg in Germany.
He is an expert in organosilicon and hybridsilica chemistry and has published over 150 articles in these fields. His mainresearch interests focus on the functionalization of hybrid silica (mainlybridged silsesquioxanes) which he develops in several different areas:controlled structuring through weak forces to finely tune their properties,reactive C-Si bonds to create porous and degradable silica, supported catalysisfor recyclability, solid phase extraction for the purification of water waste;photoluminescence for energy saving and enhancement and stimuli-responsivehybrid silica nanoparticles for drug delivery.
He has served on the French ScientificResearch Council (CNRS) as a member of the National committee evaluators forSection 12 (Architectures moléculaires; synthèses, mécanismes et propriétés)from 2000 to 2003 and also as a member of the French University Council(Physics Department – Section 28) from 2006 to 2008. He was also an externalexpert reviewer for the evaluation of the CEA-DAM (Département des ApplicationsMilitaires) at CEA-Le Ripault in 2012. He is also serving on the Board of theISGS (International Sol-Gel Society) since 2011.
