报告摘要:

Cholesteric liquid crystals consist of chiral elongated molecules and process a helical structure in which the molecules twist spatially around an axis perpendicular to the long molecule axis.  They exhibit 1-D photonic bandgap and reflect circularly polarized light.  By dispersing a polymer network in the liquid crystal, we developed a polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal whose reflection band can be tuned by applying voltages.  In the system ions are trapped on the polymer network.  When a voltage is applied, the polymer network moves under electrostatic force.  The polymer network has a strong aligning effect on the liquid crystal.  The motion of the polymer network compresses the helical pitch of the liquid crystal in the side of the cell close the cathode and stretch the pitch on the other side close to anode.  I will theoretically explain the motion of the polymer network and the effect of the polymer network on the helical pitch.  I will also discuss the factors that affect the color tuning.
