Abstract:Gynaecological cancer, uterine and ovarian, and female infertility, where conditions such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis can be predisposing factors, are areas of important research. Uterine cancer levels are increasing, and there are data suggesting a link between PCOS patients and uterine cancer. Ovarian cancer remains is often diagnosed at a late stage, with chemotherapeutic options remaining limited. We focus on developing novel biomarkers in these diseases for use as potential diagnostic markers. We aim to understand their regulation at the epigenetic and transcriptional level, with a view to targeting the regulation of these markers, as well as developing novel therapeutic agents. Finally we use biophysical approaches to complement traditional molecular and cell biology approaches to understanding the function of cell surface markers.

Introduction:

Steve Conlan is Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology and head of Reproductive Biology and Gynaecological Oncology research at Swansea University’s College of Medicine.

He is the Director of Strategic Partnerships for the College of Medicine, leading the internationalisation activities of the College.

His research focuses on the application of molecular, cellular and nano biology approaches to understanding gynaecological pathologies including endometrial and ovarian cancers, and conditions associated with female infertility including polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, and unexplained infertility associated with the endometrium, he works closely with clinical colleagues, and he holds an honorary consultant position in the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg NHS Board.

Professor Conlan was a founding Director of Swansea University’s £22 Million Centre for NanoHealth. His interests in nanotechnology centre on the characterisation of molecular and cellular interactions at the nanoscale, and the development of nanomedicines.

He works closely with the life science and healthcare industrial sector, and has active collaborations with several companies.

He is a Full Member of Houston Methodist Research Institute, Texas, Honorary Professor, at Wuhan Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Distinguished Professor at Xi'an Jiaotong University, Suzhou Academy, China.
