报告摘要

Interaction chromatography (IC) mainly utilizes the enthalpic interaction of polymeric solutes with the stationary phase. In early days of IC application to polymer separation, the solvent gradient elution method was widely used but we found that the temperature gradient elution is a powerful method for the molecular characterization of synthetic polymers with relatively narrow molecular weight distribution. Temperature gradient interaction chromatography (TGIC) exploits the thermodynamic interactions of polymer molecules with the stationary phase of chromatographic columns, in which the column temperature is controlled in a programmed manner during the elution to control the interaction strength of polymeric solutes with the stationary phase. TGIC exhibits much higher resolution than SEC in the separation according to MW and it allows many useful detectors for polymer characterization to be utilized, which is impossible in the solvent gradient elution.

TGIC has been applied to resolve a number of long-standing problems in polymer characterization, particularly for the polymers prepared by anionic polymerization which is expected to have precise molecular characteristics. For examples, TGIC resolved the issues such as rigorous determination of MW distribution of the anionic-polymerized polymers and separation according to chain architectures demonstrating clearly that the branched polymers or ring polymers prepared by the current state-of-art synthesis/purification process are still contaminated by a large amount of byproducts enough to influence their rheological property significantly.


报告人简介

Taihyun Chang received his B.S. degree in Chemistry at Seoul National University in 1975, and Ph.D. degree in Physical Chemistry at University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1984. He is a guest Scientist in Polymers Division, NBS, Gaithersburg, in 1985-1986, and is a senior researcher in Polymers Division, KRICT, Daejon, during 1986-1988. Then he becames a professor in Department of Chemistry at POSTECH, Pohang, 1988-date, where he is the Department Head in 2008-2011, and the Provost of POSTECH during 2011-2015. He is among the Editorial board of J. Polym. Sci. Polym. Phys., Eur. Polym. J., Polym. Bull., Int. J. Polym. Anal. Charact., Prog. Polym. Sci. He is the Titular member & Project coordinator of Molecular Characterization, IUPAC in 2006-2009, and the President of Polymer Society of Korea in 2012. His research interests include: 1. Static and Dynamic Properties of Polymers in Solution and Bulk; 2. Development of Polymer Characterization Method: HPLC and Mass spectrometry; 3. Thin Film and Interfacial Properties of Polymeric Materials. He won many Honors and Awards, andsupervised 50 graduate students, sponsored 8 postdoctoral researchers and visiting professors. He published about 250 original articles, 10 reviews, 7 patents.
