摘要:Bottom-up fabrication of photonic nanostructures from self-organizing soft materials with tailored optical properties is currently a burgeoning area of research. The liquid crystals capable of forming self-organized, tunable one-dimensional (1D) or three-dimensional (3D) photonic nanostructures represent such an elegant system because of their unique ability to control the propagation of light by various external stimuli.In my talk, I will focus on our recent research and development on light-directing self-organized liquid crystalline photonic nanostructures enabled by chiral molecular switches or motors: from 1D to 3D.


简介:Quan Li is Director of Organic Synthesis and Advanced Materials Laboratory at the Advanced Materials and Liquid Crystal Institute, Kent State University, where he is also Adjunct Professor in the Chemical Physics Interdisciplinary Program. He, as a Principle Investigator and Project Director, has directed research projects funded by US Department of Energy, US Air Force Office of Scientific Research, US Air Force Research Laboratory, US Army Research Office, US Department of Defense Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative, US National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA), US National Science Foundation, theOhio Third Frontier, and Samsung Electronics, among others. He received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Shanghai, where he was promoted the youngest Full Professor in Organic Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry in February 1998. He was a recipient of the CAS One-Hundred Talents Award in 1999. Li was Alexander von Humboldt Fellow in Germany. He is Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and has been elected as a member of the European Academy of Sciences. He has won the Kent State University Outstanding Research and Scholarship award. He has also been honored as Guest Professor and Chair Professor at several Universities. In the past eight years, Li has edited 8 books (3 John Wiley & Son, 3 Springer and 2 Wiley-VCH) books, and has coauthored forty chapters including the invited entry entitled "Liquid Crystals" for the prestigious Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology and "Gold Nanorods" for Encyclopedia of Surface and Colloid Science. His current research interest spans fromstimuli-responsive soft matter for photonics and electromagnetics, advanced photonic andoptoelectronic nanostructured materials for energy-harvesting and energy-saving,and functional biocompatible materials and nanoparticles to nanoengineering and device fabrications.
