Duffy教授简介:
Geoff has held academic positions at the University of Auckland New Zealand for over four decades, and in 1988 was awarded a Personal Chair (Professorship) in Chemical Engineering for his innovative research and acceptance worldwide of his pipeline design methods by the pulp and paper industry. He has two earned doctorates (DEng, PhD) from Auckland with his other graduate degrees from the University of NSW in Australia. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers UK, and was the first Chemical Engineer to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand FRSNZ. He was the inaugural Director on the NZ Pulp and Paper Research Organisation. His research interests have been in novel processes in fluid mechanics and heat transfer, with particular emphasis in the transport of asymmetric, flexible particles. He has published widely and has several patents as well as international research awards. Geoff has also had a keen interest in tertiary teaching and educational processes, and was the first full professor to be awarded the University Medal Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award in 1995.

报告内容简介:
Prof. Duffy will share many experiences he has gained from a lifetime of teaching and conference presentations. After a brief overview and introduction, he will describe a wide range of issues that will make the student learning experience more enjoyable, meaningful, and valuable. Prof. Duffy will show how ‘human factors’ play such vitals roles in the teaching-learning process. He will then describe briefly what Teachers need to do to develop their teaching methods and styles. Particularly emphasis will place on the ‘bigger picture’ concept, with the need to provide more ‘insights’ into mechanisms, the ‘reasons why’, and ‘cause-and-effect’.

Rather than simply lecture on the topic of teaching, Prof. Duffy will give a mock (pretend) ‘Student Class Lecture’, to illustrate a range of teaching techniques (widely-accepted methods as well as novel teaching practices). Review, repetition, reinforcement, revelation, illustration, and fresh insights, will all be demonstrated to show how student involvement and interest can be created and maintained. The importance of connecting the current topics to other subjects in their course, as well as to their future careers, will be shown to be of great value in the total educational process.

The ‘Presentation’ will conclude with an outline for an optional additional ‘Workshop’ on teaching methods and practice, which would include: Planning and Preparation for lectures and tutorials; Presentation Materials – slides, graphs and photos; Personal mannerisms when teaching; Voice and Speech factors; Human aspects in education.
