1982年在华东化工学院(现名华东理工大学)化学系获硕士学位,1986年在复旦大学化学系获博士学位。1986-1988年在中国科学院化学研究所进行博士后研究,1988年留化学所工作,1993年晋升研究员。曾于1988.10.-1991.4.到日本分子科学研究所和1997.6.– 1998.6.到美国加州大学圣巴巴拉分校(UCSB)进行访问研究。2012年受聘苏州大学材料与化学化工学部教授,2013年当选中国科学院院士。2014年当选英国皇家化学会会士和中国化学会常务理事。

主要从事聚合物太阳能电池光伏材料和器件、导电聚合物电化学和半导体纳米材料等方面的研究,已发表研究论文500 多篇,国内外学术会议大会报告和邀请报告90多次。发表论文已被SCI他人引用17000余次,h-因子671998年获人事部授予中青年有突出贡献专家称号,1995年获国家自然科学奖二等奖(第二完成人)、2005年获北京市科学技术奖一等奖(第一完成人)、2012年获美国化学会授予高分子学术报告奖。20132014年分别入选汤森路透发布的全球Hottest Scientific Researchers 21人名单和Highly cited researchers材料科学领域147人名单。
